The Bridge Whiskey – Inchmore
DESCRIPTION
Inchmore:
Inchmore is the largest island on Lough Ree, located in the River Shannon in the Irish midlands. Its name, meaning “big island” in Irish, reflects its size and prominence on the lake.
The island has a rich history, with evidence of early Christian settlements and monastic activity dating back to the 6th century. Monks likely used Inchmore as a place of prayer, study, and refuge, and some ruins of churches, enclosures, and other ecclesiastical structures remain. Over the centuries, the island was also a point of strategic importance on Lough Ree, serving as a landmark for travel and trade on the Shannon, and it retains a strong connection to the cultural and spiritual heritage of the midlands.
Inchmore is also notable for its small clusters of traditional farm buildings, old stone walls, and sheltered bays that were historically used for landing boats. Today, it remains a quiet haven for anglers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those exploring the Shannon by boat, offering a glimpse into both the natural and historical character of the lake.
