The Bridge Whiskey – Portaneena
DESCRIPTION
Description:
Portaneena:
Portaneena is a scenic townland on the southeastern shores of Lough Ree in County Westmeath, close to the village of Glassan. Set within a peaceful rural landscape where farmland meets the calm waters of the River Shannon’s great midland lake, it is known for its natural beauty, tranquillity, and sweeping lakeside views.
The name Portaneena comes from the Irish Port an Fhíona, meaning “the landing place of the wine.” Local tradition suggests that in early medieval times, wine was brought ashore here by boat for nearby monastic settlements, reflecting the importance of Lough Ree as a historic route for travel and trade long before modern roads existed.
One of the most well-known landmarks in the area today is the Wineport Lodge Hotel, a renowned lakeside hotel and spa situated directly on the shores of Lough Ree. Its name echoes the historic origins of Portaneena and it has become a popular destination for dining, relaxation, and enjoying panoramic lake views.
The surrounding area offers a range of points of interest, including boating, fishing, lakeside walks, and wildlife watching on Lough Ree, as well as nearby woodland and heritage sites such as Portlick Millennium Forest. Together, these features make Portaneena a place where history, landscape, and modern lakeside hospitality come together naturally.
